BOYAN SLAT’S IMPACT VS. GRETA THUNBERGS IGNORANCE

When trying to find a blog on Greta Thunberg there were many options availiable. Greta became highly covered by the media as the voice of the kids against global warming. She represents a very powerful message and many writers have covered her speeches. Many take issue with the stance she holds. Critics argue that her ideas are impractical and are not able to be implemented at mass. When trying to find a blog about Greta Thunberg, I was looking for one that believed this.

What was slightly more difficult was to discover a blog on Boyan Slat, I felt that he wasn’t written about nearly as much as I had hoped considering all the accomplishments he has made and the potential for what he can accomplish in the near future. I found the blog that best, and almost exclusively, covered the work he has put out is from the website of his own project, The Ocean Cleanup. Boyan and his team put up blog updates monthly. One of the best aspects of Boyan’s work is that he is very reasonable in all of his projections for what is possible to accomplish.

THE OCEAN CLEANUP PROJECT BLOG

Ethos: A lot of the blog is very based in science and one of the most impressive things about The Ocean Cleanup Project Blog, is how they do not conceal there blunders. After they mess up on an aspect of the project, they inform of their mistakes, take responsibility, and share how they will recover and correct the issues.

Pathos: The Ocean Cleanup publishes many pictures that are taken from the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch. The pictures are very sad to see and make you want the project to succeed.

Logos: The blog covers all the progress made and is very based in science.

The problem with Greta Thunberg’s sea crossings

Ethos: Joanna Rossiter convinces the audience of the authority that she is writing from by referencing professionals who have spoken out against Greta’s ideals

Pathos: The blog post uses strong examples of pathos. They compare the rising uncompromising ideals of environmentalism to that of religion that has gone too far and no longer stands for the original message

Logos: Rositer tries to convince by showing how impractical Greta’s ideas have become and how inefficient they are even for someone who prioritizes the environment

On my Rhetorical Blog, I’m going to try to judge what methods of protecting the environment are effective and what is not. I think many environmentalist are flooded with different beliefs about what they should be doing and many of them are highly debated if they are actually helpful. The truth about what we should be doing has become diluted. I will try to discern the best options we have to restore the environment.

The Rhetorical Analysis of these blogs is extremely important. It is very helpful to try to understand the methods that writers use to convince readers. Even when someone is correct, its not always easy to have people agree with their viewpoint. In this example, I analyzed the both a blog directly from the main source and the blog of a critic. They play very different roles and therefore communicate with the audience differently

“Blogs have downsides: they are idiosyncratic, can be self-indulgent and egoistic, and can distort issues by spreading misinformation very quickly…. But also remember that blogs have reported many instances of the mainstream news sources failing to live up to their own standards.”
